Women’s Body Casting Artist Ellen Downes has cast 30 women’s torsos and painted them gold. The golden body casts will be exhibited alongside the powerful stories of the women behind them.
This is a project celebrating the beauty and diversity of women’s bodies and a platform for the stories behind them. We are rejecting unrealistic beauty standards, debunking myths and raising our voices to share women’s experiences and stories that need to be told.
The 30 women collectively tell stories of what it means to live in a woman’s body from a range of perspectives. The women are aged 20-75, present a diverse range of sexual orientation, gender identity, race and experiences. Their experiences explore their relationships with their bodies through themes such as body image, motherhood, sexuality, menstruation, sexual assault, coming of age, grief, mental health, disability and self-love.
Together we are raising our voices a to say it loud and clear that EVERY body is beautiful, valid and has a story that deserves to be heard
A book of photographs of the casts and the full story texts of the women behind them will be on sale at the exhibition.
Events: In the evenings after the gallery closes to the public, we are holding a series of very special, intimate events in collaboration with local women makers, performers, artists and teachers. All events are run and coordinated by local Bristol women.
